Frequently ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE SPECIAL KIDS RACE?
It's a reason to hit the ground running for an amazing cause. While we seek to promote health and fitness within our community, the heart of the Special Kids Race remains to raise money for children with special needs.
WHAT IS SPECIAL KIDS?
Special Kids is a Christian therapy and nursing center for children with special needs. Since opening the doors in 1998 in Murfreesboro, TN with just one child, we have served over 3,100 children from 18 different counties in middle Tennessee.
Special Kids offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, feeding therapy, nursing services, recreational therapy, a peer modeling program, and a summer day camp. We serve children with special needs ages birth to 21 years who have been referred to our organization by a physician. For more information, visit specialkidstn.com.
WHAT IS MURFREESBORO MEDICAL CLINIC?
Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & Surgicenter (MMC) is our presenting sponsor for the sixth year in a row, and we are so thankful for their continued support! In addition to providing monetary and in-kind resources for the race, they are also hosting the race at their location. With the help of MMC and its mission of "going beyond the walls of the clinic," Special Kids will have the opportunity to reach even more children and families within the community through the 6th Annual Special Kids Race.
HOW FAR WILL I BE RUNNING/WALKING?
We're giving you options! You can choose from the 15K (9.34 miles), the 5K (3.1 miles), and the 1 mile fun run, with two different starting times for the 1 mile distance.
How fast do I need to run or walk?
Participants must keep to a minimum of 15 minutes per mile pace for the 15K and 5K. All paces are welcome in the 1 Mile Family Fun Run.
HOW DO THE T-SHIRT SIZES RUN?
The 2017 Special Kids Race t-shirt will be a soft-style t-shirt. The sizes are Unisex XS-2XL and Youth Medium and Youth Large.
CAN family members RUN WITH THEIR CHILDREN IN THE 1-MILE FUN RUN?
Definitely! We encourage parents and relatives to run with their children, but every participant in the 1-mile fun run must register. Small children in strollers do not have to register.
ARE STROLLERS ALLOWED?
Yes, you are welcome to push a stroller in any of our three race distances- 15K, 5K, and 1 Mile. We do ask that you line up in the corral marked 'strollers' if you are participating in the 15K or 5K or in the very back if you are doing the 1 Mile race. We love having kids in strollers out on the course, but it can be dangerous for our other runners if you line up in an early corral. Please help us keep everyone safe and start in the stroller corral if you will be pushing a stroller.
ARE DOGS ALLOWED?
No. For the safety of all of our participants both on and off the course, dogs are not allowed at the Special Kids Race.
WILL THERE BE AWARDS?
Of course! Awards will be given for each age group and gender in the 15K/5K, as well as cash awards for overall winners, as generously donated by MaxShred of Murfreesboro.
WHERE IS THE COURSE?
Both the 5K, 15K, and 1 Mile will begin and end in front of the new MMC building, located at 1272 Garrison Drive, Murfreesboro, TN 37129.
WHERE CAN I PARK?
Because we are expecting well over 2,000 vehicles on race day, we have several local partners who have generously donated their space for our participants. Please check out our parking map to view where parking is available and to see the route for our shuttle bus to the site.
CAN I GET A REFUND OR CHANGE MY DISTANCE ?
We hold to our no refund policy for all cancellations, and no registrations can be transferred to a different individual. You can change your race distance until April 4 on the Special Kids Race registration site. Simply go to runsignup.com, log into your account, and follow these instructions from the RunSignUp registration folks. After April 4, all change of distance requests will be processed at Packet Pick-Up on April 6 and 7.
WHY SHOULD I RUN/WALK THE 6TH ANNUAL SPECIAL KIDS RACE?
This race can help you keep those resolution goals in the new year and provide training for spring races like the Country Music Marathon. And because the course is fast and flat, you'll have an opportunity to nab a record time. The 15K alone is a unique distance, so try it out and set an instant personal record.
