FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE SPECIAL KIDS RACE?
It's a reason to hit the ground running for an amazing cause. While we seek to promote health and fitness within our community, the heart of the Special Kids Race remains to raise money for children with special needs.
WHAT IS SPECIAL KIDS?
Special Kids is a Christian therapy and nursing center for children with special needs. Since opening the doors in 1998 in Murfreesboro, TN with just one child, we have served over 4,700 children from 19 different counties in middle Tennessee.
Special Kids offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, feeding therapy, nursing services, recreational therapy, a peer-modeling program, and a summer day camp- Camp Ability. We serve children with special needs ages birth- to 21-years old. For more information, visit specialkidstn.com.
WHAT IS MURFREESBORO MEDICAL CLINIC?
Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & Surgicenter (MMC) is our presenting sponsor for the ninth year in a row, and we are so thankful for their continued support! In addition to providing monetary and in-kind resources for the race, they are also hosting the race at their location. With the help of MMC and its mission of "going beyond the walls of the clinic," Special Kids will have the opportunity to reach even more children and families within the community through the 9th Annual Special Kids Race.
HOW FAR WILL I BE RUNNING/WALKING?
We're giving you options! You can choose from the 15K (9.34 miles), the 10K (6.2 miles), the 5K (3.1 miles), and the 1-mile fun run.
How fast do I need to run or walk?
Participants must keep to a minimum of 15-minutes per mile pace for the 15K, 10K, and 5K. All paces are welcome in the 1-Mile Family Fun Run.
HOW DO THE T-SHIRT SIZES RUN?
T-shirts run true to size.
CAN family members RUN WITH THEIR CHILDREN IN THE 1-MILE FUN RUN?
Definitely! We encourage parents and relatives to run with their children, but every participant in the 1-mile fun run must register. However, if you’re already participating in another race distance (15K, 10K, or 5K) you DO NOT need to register for the 1-mile fun run as well- feel free to go ahead and walk or run with your child(ren). Small children in strollers do not have to register.
ARE STROLLERS ALLOWED?
Yes, you are welcome to push a stroller in any of our four race distances- 15K, 10K, 5K, and 1-Mile. We do ask that you line up in the corral marked 'strollers' if you are participating in the 15K, 10K, or 5K or in the very back if you are doing the 1-Mile race. We love having kids in strollers out on the course, but it can be dangerous for our other runners if you line-up in an early corral. Please help us keep everyone safe and start in the stroller corral if you will be pushing a stroller.
ARE DOGS ALLOWED?
No. For the safety of all of our participants both on and off the course, dogs are not allowed at the Special Kids Race. An exception are service dogs.
WILL THERE BE AWARDS?
Of course! Awards will be given for each age group and gender in the 15K/10K/5K.
WHERE IS THE COURSE?
The 5K, 10K, and 15K will begin and end in front of the MMC building, located at 1272 Garrison Drive, Murfreesboro, TN, 37129. The 1-Mile fun run will begin at Gateway Island (there will be signs for where to go) and end in front of the MMC building.
WHERE CAN I PARK?
Parking will be offered at locations surrounding Murfreesboro Medical Clinic. We will update this closer to the race with specific details.
CAN I GET A REFUND OR CHANGE MY DISTANCE?
We hold to our no refund policy for all cancellations, and no registrations can be transferred to a different individual. You can change your race distance until March 5 on the Special Kids Race registration site. Simply go to runsignup.com, log-in to your account, and follow the instructions from the RunSignUp registration folks. After March 5, all change of distance requests will be processed at Packet Pick-Up on March 6th.
WHY SHOULD I RUN/WALK THE 9TH ANNUAL SPECIAL KIDS RACE?
Because you can BE THE DIFFERENCE! Many of the children that come through our doors at Special Kids would love to be able to walk or run on their own, but they need special assistance to get there or they are working really hard on a goal to meet their next milestone. They are totally worth it. When you run your race, you are helping a child learn to walk, talk, or have a better opportunity at health through the amazing work at Special Kids. We believe that because you can, you should be the difference, for the kids! “…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)
It’s also a fun, flat, course and, with awards for every age group, you have a great chance of winning a prize! This race can help you keep those resolution goals in the New Year as well and provide training for spring races like the Country Music Marathon. The 10K and 15K are unique distances, so try them out and set an instant personal record!
